| A
965 turbo that didn't satisfied everybody and some victories to celebrate
? What a great opportunity to commercialize a special serie of the Porsche
911 turbo ! The 965 was a good car but with no less than 1,470kg compared to the 1,250kg (approximatively) of previous 930, the 20hp more weren't enough. Of course the handling, active and passive safety and most of all comfort have been very much increased. The 965 Turbo 2 is now equiped with catalytic converters, power direction, ABS, airbags, full leather cockpit, 299mm croos bored ventilated discs on front and rear, clim and so on... Great to go in town to have a dinner at the Ritz but for cicuit, be prepared to be passed over by a lot of Carrera RS 3.6 for example. Even Porsche's direction realized it so they commercialized a kit which transforms the 965 Turbo 2 in 965 Turbo S. This edition is similar to the standard version on every points except the negine. With improved eprom and new camshafts, both giving a new distribution diagram, the engine developped 355hp and 47,1mkg. It allows the car to be 11kph faster and to cover the 0-100kph test in 5"5s. But that wasn't the end of the 3.3 turbocharged;engine. To celebrate good results of the 911 turbo in IMSA Supercar Championship, Porsche presented at the 1992 Geneva showroom a new model : the 911 turbo Supercar. The car exposed was a yellow prototype, a true racing car brought to the road with full luxury cockpit and improved aerodynamics. Regarding the public's reaction, Porsche decided to produce a limited edition (80 exemplars) of the 911 turbo S Leichtbau. As the 911 GT2 in 1995, the turbo Leichtbau (Leichtbau means light construction or light body) is the key of driving pleasure and great handling : a turbocharged engine in a light body. The car has been lightened according to the RennSport programm. Porsche removed rear seats, electric powered windows and mirrors, A/C system, radio, power steering, rear window heating system and wiper and soundproofing materials. Bucket seats were installed like lightened doors (only 8kg) that open with a strip. Despite the athletic definition of the Leichtbau, the cockpit is quitze luxury. Each part that could have been covered with it receive thin leather, even the air outlet vents. As an end, the Leichtbau receive a lighter three branches steering-wheel with no airbag. With all these modifications, the 911 turbo S only weight 1,295 kg, 180 kg less than a stock turbo. The body also received big improvements with front and rear lids, doors and rear spoiler made of carbon reinforced with glass fibers. All glasses are made of thin glasse. The rear spoiler, thinner than on standard version, is particularly beautiful and derivates from the one fitted on the Carrera 4 Leichtbau. It contributes to the engine cooling and vehicle stability at high speed. To support the higher temperatures reached in the engine compartment, the rear flares are featuring two air dams, like on the 959 and an additional oil cooler have been added. The chassis have been lowered by 40 mm and the racing department of Weissach set the coil springs, shock absorbers and anti roll bars to a stiffer level. The turbo S Leichtbau is also the first production Porsche to receive 18" rims. These three pieces Speedline wheels are by far the most beautiful model available on a 911. With 8Jx18 front and 10Jx18 rear, the tyres size have been increased to 235/40 and 265/35 front and rear respectively. Regarding the capacities of the car, the front discs diameter have been enlarged from 298 to 322 mm. Porsche has also modified the algorithm of ABS, now near from racing standards. To cool it efficiently, the front spoiler recived two front air dams instead of fog lights. Regarding
the reglementations of the IMSA Supercar Championship, the engine of the
911 turbo couldn't reach high power like on 935 for example. So, the street
homologuated 911 turbo S is as powerful as the 911 turbo racing version
with 381 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 50 mkg @ 4,800 rpm. Modifications went on
eprom settings and new camshafts, outlet, valves, wastegate. The turbocharger
is also different and the boost pressure is higher than on the 320 hp
engine. To face this power, the bi-disc clutch has been replaced by a
single disc one. All these modifications made of the 911 turbo Leichtbau a unique car with all that a DM 295,000 customer could expect. The new distribution diagram have bring back the characteristic time response of turbocharged engines. Porsche tried and managed to lower it on the second generation of 911 turbo but the highly performant Leichtbau couldn't escape to it with 115 hp/l. As a result, accelerations are even more percussive and impressive. By its definition, the 1992 turbo S is a real sportcar and demand a lot of attention and trajectory knowledge from its driver. The handling precision and the efficiency of the car on road is quite devastating for any volunteer. I guess this car is close from the street version of the 911 GT1, even if the GT1 is closer to the racing car. With only 4"6 seconds to reach 100 kph, 15"8 from 0 to 200 kph and a standing kilometer in 22"8 s, a top speed of 290 kph (180 mph), all the luxe you need and this diabolic handling precision, the Leichtbau is by far the most desirable 911. Moreover, you always have the sensation that the car is waiting for the first mistake to humiliate your driving experience. A real devil in your hands.
