With the apparition of the SC series in 1978, the 911 became a more comfortable and usable car. Full leather interior, A/C system, power windows were available options that many owners had choosen just because a now sportcar has to be fast but also luxurious. The new Porsche 928 was the perfect illustration of this concept. And the 1984 Carrera 3.2 put it higher with a lot of equipments now fitted as standard. As a result, the 911 get heavier and heavier trough the years mainly by this factor. And from the 1,090 kg of the 1966 911 S 2.0, the Carrera 3.2 added some 200 kg more in no less than 20 years. Maybe the car were more comfortable and exclusive but a real sportcar has to be as lighter as possible. In this view, Porsche decided to produce a lighter and faster version of the Carrera 3.2, intended to club races. But this model has to be affordable that's why it doesn't feature technology improvements. From the exterior, the car is easily identifiable by its fixed rear spoiler and the 16" Fuchs rims (15" in Germany). Bridgestone tyres were fitted as standard : 205/55 on 6Jx16 front and 245/45 on 8Jx16 rims rear. Those equipments are fitted as standard on turbo look models. The rear spoiler is a finner version of the 930 one. As the car was devoided of fog lights, the front spoiler is similar to the 911 SC. A little 'CS' logo took the place of the 'Carrera' one on the the rear engine lid. The most recognizable cars were painted in Grand Prix White with red 'Carrera CS' paintings on the bottom of the doors and rims painted in Guard Red. Many comfort elements have been removed to reduce the weight of the Carrera Club Sport : no foglights, power seats, power windows, automatic setting of the ventilation system, central locking, rear seats, sound proofing materials and carpets (except on ceiling and engine), central console... And to accentuate the philosophy of the car, major options weren't available (turbo look, A/C system, full leather interior, headlight washers). At the end, 60 kg have been won compared to a stock Carrera and more regarding a fully equiped car. Chassis settings just went on lowering the car and stiffer Bilstein shock absorbers. Combined to larger wheels and tyres, the car has a great adherence and handling precision is enhanced. As an end, the engine was slightly improved with revised DME, new air filter, hollow inlet valves, specific crankshaft carter and cylinder heads. It wasn't more powerful but has an extended power band and a better hability to rev. The red line get from 6,300 rpm to 6,850 rpm and top speed was some 10 kph faster than stock Carrera 3.2 to reach just less than 255 kph (158 mph). Only 610 exemplars of the Carrera Club Sport have been produced in 1987. This special edition of the Carrera 3.2 was the first of a good series : Club Sport, Anniversary and Speedster models are great cars, often researched by well lit Porsche 911 buyers. The car is a real sport version of the stock Carrera but Porsche refused to name it Carrera RS (and to improve it harder) because the next generation of the 911, the type 964, was soon ready to be produced; so the Carrera CS was expected not to be more powerful nor faster. But comapred to a standard Carrera 3.2, the result was great with quicker response of the engine, more beautiful sound and better contact to the road.
