Porsche 911 SC 3.1

A 3.1 engine in a 911 SC ! Isn't it a mistake ? No, just a fantasy from the factory.

In the last seventies, Dr. Fuhrmann was at the head of Porsche direction and wanted to stop the production of the 911 which wasn't, according to him, a modern car anymore. The last model to be produced appeared in 1979. It was called 911 SC ( for Super Carrera ) and received the 3.0 engine of the Carrera 3.0 (1977 - 200 hp). Little modifications were added like an air pump to clean the exhaust gas or eleven blades cooling fan. With a new distribution diagram, the power get down from 200 hp @ 6,000 rpm to 180 hp @ 5,500 rpm with same 8.5:1 compression ratio. As a result, the 911 wasn't as performant as the Carrera 3.0; this was a commercial strategy to promote the new Porsche 928.

The next year, the 911 SC received a bigger oil pump, an increased cooling fan and a compression ratio of 8.6:1 that raised power to 188 hp @ 5,500 rpm. The car was showing the same performances than the first 911 SC. Porsche maintened a low compression ration on its models to allow usage of normal fuel ( octane 91 ). In 1981, the 911 SC received a higher compression ration of 9.8:1 giving 204 hp @ 5,900 rpm. The fuel indice required was octane 98. But before that, in september 1979, a special 911 SC has been produced at around 100 exemplars. The half was sold to Porsche personnel while the 50 others were sold around the world. This car was featuring the bore of the new 911 turbo 3.3 and the stroke of the 911 SC 3.0 engine. As a result, the engine was a 3,122 cc ( 97x70,4 mm ). Power was now 210 hp @ 5,800 rpm and the torque raised from 27mkg @ 4,100 rpm to 28,6 mkg @ 4,700 rpm. The engine also recived the chain tensioners that would fit the Carrera 3.2 in 1984 but the mechanical K-Jetronic injection was still here. So, what's the aim of this car ? Porsche used to test lots of solutions for next models on actual models since the beginnig. We know that the chain tensioners were a weack point of the 1974 - 1984 models and maybe they first tested it on this car. Moreover, some 911 SC received additionnal features like turbo front and rear spoiler, fog lights and more interesting, dual exhaust system ( the first standard 911 to receive it was the 965 turbo 2 in 1991 ! ) and 7x16 & 8x16 turbo rims.

The car is more performant than any 911 SC model and it seems that mechanical injection make it greater to drive than Carrera 3.2.

I guess a lot of special series like this one have been produced by the factory and they're only few informations on it. I have heard of 2.4 fitted with 2.7 Carrera RS engine and other modifications for example or Carrera with 3.0 turbo engine. Nevertheless, all these cars are repertoried at the factory in Stuttgart. Personnes who know about all these special series would be fine to contact me.
