Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 To homologuate the 911 Carrera 3.8 RSR in GT category, it has to be derivated from a production model. That's why Porsche commercialized a new Carrera RS : the 3.8. The
Carrera RS 3.8 has been made with a lot of existing elements including
turbo 3.6 body, Leichtbau front and rear spoiler, Carrera RS 3.6 interior
features but its engine is totally new. Like on the Carrera RS 3.6, lightening
have been really pushed on : no rear seats or electric commands anymore
( to open the windows or to close the car, no alarm, no radio set...)
and two non-adjustable bucket seats. Of course, external door panels,
front wings and front cover are made of aluminium while finer toughened
glasses is utilised for all windows and for the windshield. The engine
is nowadays well known ( it is even an option now ! ) but in 1993, it
was totaly new and offered a big increasement of power : the flat six
get up to 300hp and achieved 80hp/L compared to the 72 of the Carrera
RS 3.6. The bigger capacity was obtained by using a 102mm bore (100mm
before) that gives exactly 3,746 cm3. In prevision of a racing model,
the admission system have been totally revised. It now includes a delivery-meter
of the air weight by a warming wire and a pipe with individual admission
throttle valve for each cylinder. Like
on the Carrera RS 3.6 but contrary to 964 engines, the engine flywheel
is monopart and lightened while the oil radiator is more effective. The
transmission isn't far away from production models and features a limited
slip differential with 40% locking factor. The clearance of the gearshift
have been shortened and the assistance direction disappeared like on the
previous model. Of course, suspension have been upgraded with Bilstein
dampers, harder springs and stabilizer bars. The brakes are those of the
Turbo Leichtbau ( 322mm front and 299mm rear ) and the ABS has been kept.
The rims are quite enormous : 9J18 & 11J18. They are fitted with 235/40
and 285/35 tyres on front and rear respectively. With full oil and fuel,
the car weights only 1,210 kg. That's a really great score indeed. It
was sold 220.000 DM, all taxes included when commercialized in Germany. |
