This inteview was part of a program for Father's day on the BBC. Roy talks about his relationship with Hayley and Crispian.

We are in Roy's house and on the tv, they're showing a clip from Later with Jools Holland where Kula Shaker perform 'Smart Dogs'.

Roy : This is light entertainment, is it. Oh my god! It's Crispian.

Q : What do you think of the music?

Roy : Well, I'm not... I'm too old to really fully understand. I don't think I got very far passed the Beatles. That was kind of a milestone, wasn't it? The 60s, sort of big changes.

(Parts of the Boutling brothers' movie 'The Family Way' are shown)

Roy : There's a rather moving scene...I suddenly found my head drawn towards Hayley and she
kissed me. But I knew the quality of the kiss was terribly different to the ordinary ...

(makes kissing noise).
I realised in fact, that I liked her a lot too.

(shows pictures on the wall of his wives)

Roy : There's Jean, my second wife, Sandra, Hayley, Scotty...Scotty...yes...uhm...number five was Hayley (counts on fingers for this one)

I was delighted to have, you know, Hayley to produce a child that was mine. I can't say that it was anything special as a babe. But I had been through the experience. Terrible, isn't it, to have to admit that I had been through the experience a number of times before.

Q : How many times?

Roy : Well, I don't know...you almost have me counting and I'm not very good at mathematics. I think it was four or five times...I don't know. Oh no, it must have been more than five...six...number six.

Q : number seven?

Roy :No, it wasn't... it was number...Oh my goodness, I've got it all wrong, he was the ninth. No, he was...he was...the tenth.

Q : Was he your last child?

Roy : Yes.

I've lost track by now but he's still a cute baby, isn't he?! :-)

Hayley took a play. In the play, there was a young dashing fellow who fell in love with her and she fell
in love with him. And that was the end of this great romance...that's my own romance. I felt pretty bad.

Q : And what did you do?

Roy : Do you want to know? I drank an awful lot. Utter cliche. I drank a hell of a lot. In fact, I can tell you this, it's very ordinary...that... because I drank so much, I had to go to a nursing home.

I opened the paper one morning and discovered that Hayley was going to have another child by the gentleman she was with. Now, what is going to happen to my child? He must be very careful, he's going to be the odd man out. He's going to be looking at his halfbrother and he's going to be wondering whether they really want him. All these ideas passed through my mind. And I thought that if I could do anything to prevent that makes his childhood the miserable thing that could have easily become, I'm going to do it. And it's that moment in time that I decided that I would no longer attempt to see him and give him the chance of being absorbed into the family. He was four and a half.

But if you take a decision of that nature, you have to stand by it and had I, say, heard from him as he grew a little bit older, had I done that, had I heard of him, I would have then found it perhaps even more difficult. But I didn't. So there you are.

Q : So you didn't hear from him at all?

Roy : Nothing at all.

halfbrother Jason, mum Hayley and Crispian

There was a piece in the paper and in it was the assertion that he and I were enemies. I think at that time, he had just started up Hula...Hula...Kula Shaker.

Q : Was it a difficult news for you?

Roy : Not a bit. He came down here and we had a long conversation.

Q : Was he surprised to find you here?

Roy : (Roy lives in a rather shabby house, not at all what you'd expect from a one time successful moviemaker) I think the nature of the accommodation in which I live now must have come as a bit of a surprise but he didn't say 'My god, why are you living in this...uhm...'. No, it was fine. We got on very well.

Q : Was he friendly?

Roy : Of course he was.

(Roy shows some pictures of Crispian as a young boy - about 13 years old - and with his wife Jo)

There's Crispian with his charming little wife and that is a picture that Hayley sent me and I think it's rather splendid (this was a picture of Hayley and Crispian together at sunset, probably on holiday)

Q : When you met after all this time, did you feel that you would see him again?

Roy : Oh yes, he gave me his number, he gave me his address but he did warn me that shortly after Christmas, he would be going back to America and then..this came as a big surprise, that he would be providing music for his grandad's 90th birthday. I have phoned, I have left messages but I think he has been pretty busy.
