The 6 types of Nutritients
The Use of Alcohol in Sports:
American College of Sports Medicine Position Stand on the Use of Alcohol in Sports. The acute ingestion of (moderate amounts) of alcohol will not substantially influence metabolic or physiological functions essential to physical performance and will not improve (but may decrease) strength, power, local muscular endurance, speed, and cardiovascular
endurance. Read full article.
Creatine Phosphate
Creatine Supplementation: Its Effect on Human Muscular Performance and Body Composition:
The use of creatine (Cr) in its supplemental form, Cr monohydrate, has become rather widespread. The discovery that the Cr and phosphocreatine (PCr) content in human muscle can be increased by oral ingestion of supplemental Cr has led to numerous studies examining its benefits on exercise performance. Cr monohydrate supplementation appears to result in an increased ability to maintain power output during high-intensity exercise and increase the rate of PCr resynthesis during the recovery phase of intermittent high-intensity
exercise. This article discusses the theoretical basis for Cr supplementation and reviews what is known about its effects on
performance. Read full article.
Vitamins
Vitamin E May Lessen Post-Workout Muscle Soreness:
A dose of vitamin E may ease that stiff ache some of us feel after a bout of
exercise. The study's authors believe the vitamin acts as an antioxidant, mopping up the damaging byproducts of a strenuous workout.

Vitamin Benefits and Dangers:
In today’s anti-drug environment, some coaches and athletes are turning to
mega-vitamins. However, the use of mega-vitamins can produce harmful
side-effects, including life-threatening allergic reactions. Read full article.
The IOC List of Prohibited Substances and Methods
Nutritional Supplements can result in positive drug test:
A study by the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
in which 634 nutritional supplements were tested, revealed that 14.8% of these
supplements contained (non-labeled) substances that would have led to a positive
doping test. Read full article.
EPO
The Use of Blood Doping as an Ergogenic Aid:
American College of Sports Medicine Position Stand on the Use of Blood Doping as an Ergogenic Aid.
Blood doping has been achieved by either infusing red blood cells or by administering the drug erythropoietin to artificially increase red blood cell mass. Blood doping can improve an athlete’s ability to perform submaximal and maximal endurance exercise. In addition, blood doping can help reduce physiologic strain during exercise in the heat and perhaps at altitude. Conversely, blood doping is associated with risks that can be serious and impair athletic
performance. Read full article.
